Lose It Big

From losing to living

I am a 41 year old father and husband that want to be in a little better shape. One of my New Year’s resolutions of 2011 was to be able to see a six pack of abs before I hit 40. During the summer of 2011, I thought this 5’6″ old guy could still play basketball with 6′ plus guys that just graduated high school. I tried and ended up with a torn rotator cuff and a torn tendon in my big foot. Not only was I short but, I had to finish the season with one arm and one foot. Talking about feeling old. I had my rotator cuff re-anchored in November. So, my six pack was pretty much beer only and I ended up the heaviest that I have ever been close to 170 pounds. I still have a bum toe but, I am seeing how far my pain can go without getting it surgically repaired.

So, now in February 2012 my work decided to do a Biggest Loser competition. This was my sign to get back to my normal weight. A big thing about me is that I am a tight wad. This competition cost money to enter. I don’t like spending money so; I am in it to win it. I don’t think I will ever have the abs I want but, now I am shooting for no or little love handles.

Update…February 22, 2013

It’s been a while since I was on this page.  I did win my competition by losing about 23% of my body weight.  I still have a bum toe that I say I am going to get fixed but I like working out too much to try to stay off of it.  In December of 2012, I started doing a Kettlebell Bootcamp and I am hooked.  So, now I am not so much watching everything I eat.  I am eating healthy and exercising.

Hey – we have a few similarities…height and a fitness goal and that elusive 6 pack. You said you wouldn’t be able to attain it now. What the heck do you mean by that? Of course you can! I got a few years on you and I’m finally getting there. I’m no body builder but after a lot of hard work they are starting to show through ( http://coachdougbowers.com/2012/09/08/phase-3/ ) So if I can do it…a young fella like you can definitely do it!
    Never surrender!

You know like I do, that it takes a lot of commitment especially the older we are. Sometimes priorities change and that is where I am now. A six pack doesn’t mean I am any healthier. Kids and family and food is a big priority now. I am not going to stop working out but I am am still going to splurge a little with out feeling so guilty if that makes any sense.

Cheese cake! Oh yeah – it’s not a torture test. Still enjoy life – 100% correct. The 6 pack is just a fun goal to strive for. Your priorities seem solid to me. I don’t have kids but my wife is my life…we plan to be organic farmers in just a few years.
Rock on and well done by leaving the guilty feelings waaaay in the back of the closet somewhere!

It seems we are two of a kind. I just hit 50 and dad to two darling lil girls. . I am 5’7″ and have been140lbs, give or take, most of my life. I have a very hard time putting weight on as I really have runners genes.”Hard gainer’ they called it. I started going to the gym years ago to put weight onand just get stronger, tired of saying. “can you pick that up for me.” Through this I lost the cartliedge in my left arm I found out in the 90’s. So my rotator cuff has to navigate through a eries of bone spurs and when it gets off tract or lying on one, Very painful, as you know.

Keep up your hard work Lose it! It only gets harder! But you’ll be the fittest 50year old dad out there! 🙂

i love this! congratulations on achieving a healthier lifestyle. my story – i gained too much weight after pregnancy. rather than lose it, i just gained more. it was not good to feel out of breath while trying to follow my toddler. i decided enough was enough – a few years ago, i got back on track and now, at 40, i too, do not have the flattest/tonest abs. but i’m still happy to have gone from a size 17 to a 9.- roughly 45-50 lbs lost. i’m doing p90x, btw. and also power yoga.
