This will be a back to back post. Two days in a row is a record for me. It got me to thinking of a question. What actually motivates me to run?
- I am stuck in front of my desk all day. I have to get up and move.
- I know it has to be burning some calories.
- Surely, it makes me healthier.
- Sometimes it helps me think.
- Sometimes it helps me NOT think.
- I don’t want to go to lunch and eat “good” but, unhealthy food.
- I like to run in the fun runs that serve beer, wine, chocolate, foam, or mud.
- Most importantly, I am going to the beach in a month. The sun is out and I am very pale. I run to soak up some rays.
What motivates you to run?

A couple of weekends ago I played in the mud without getting into trouble. I ran the Indiana Spartan Race. This race was about 5 miles of trail running with 20 plus obstacles. The obstacles ranged from jumping over walls to crawling under walls, to belly crawling in slippery mud under barbed wire to climbing a cargo net ladder pyramid. Flipping tires, pulling cinder blocks on a chain, carrying a 30 pound sandbag were a few other obstacles. I also, had to rope climb to a bell about 30 feet in the air. If we failed any obstacle we had to do 30 burpees. It wasn’t about getting the fastest time but, more of pushing myself and being a team player. This was one the best races I have ever been part of. As you can imagine the clean-up was a bit of a chore. First as you might see I was the lone male on my team. Getting dressed back at the car was a bit nerve racking but, I figured if they have seen one, they have seen them all, right? It was a blast we hung out at the car and had a few drinks and talked about the race. We plan on doing more of these.
Also, as a week passed I noticed scrapes and bruises. Here is a good one under my arm.

Wow. Talk about a long break….Where have I been? I have been here but, lazy. I was looking through the blogs I follow and I think they have all died away as well. It’s funny how that works. I am guessing no one follows me anymore. I wouldn’t blame them. I have been a bump on a log and not writing anything. It’s warming up and I really need to get ready for bikini season. No one wants to see me in a bikini though. I haven’t stopped exercising. I am addicted to it. I am getting ready to run the Spartan Race. That will be a muddy blast. The best thing I have done lately is I went on a 20 mile hike with a weighted ruck (backpack) on. It was fun. Ramble ramble with no aim with this post. I am ready for warmer weather and less layers so I will not have to look like this at the office.

I need to keep this as positive as I can because in the end I did have a great time in Florida on Spring Break. This will probably be a little long winded so, I apologize upfront.
What a drive! We left Indiana at 7:00 am with the Garmin saying the hotel was just 10.5 hours away. That is perfect we picked a hotel with an indoor pool and free breakfast. We should arrive between 5 pm and 6 pm, right? I forgot I have 3 kids and the spring break traffic down I-65 S and I-75 S is crazy. Bathroom breaks averaged 30 minutes. I have no clue why we can’t just get out use the bathroom and get back on the road. On the road if you were not going 80 MPH at some spots you would get run over. Then in other spots we would be at a dead stop for no visible reason. If we could just drive at 60 MPH constantly it would work out better. With that said we didn’t get to the hotel until after 9:00 pm. Since the heated indoor pool and hot tub was open 24 hours a day, this hotel turned into a big hit with the kids. Then they were able to wake up and make their own waffles. Only 5 hours left to final destination. Whoops, I forgot kids and traffic again (7 hours).
We are staying at my in-laws 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo in a retirement community. My mother-in-law (MIL) has it set up for the kids to stay in the extra bedroom, 2 on blow up mattresses and one on a love seat. This room also will serve as where all 5 of us will live out of our suitcase. My MIL is great but, she is also very opinionated and sees things only her way. I know we didn’t have to stay here but, it was nice to be able to have a place to stay for free. Keeping us all in this small bedroom was a way to keep the other areas of her condo status quo. My wife and I were supposed to have the pull out bed in the front room. Everything in the condo has a place. No drinks on counters, tables, sink, etc. without a napkin or coaster under it. Wipe down the shower. Don’t leave anything out. I need a little more freedom. No fighting, yelling, bickering…haha. Have you not met your grand kids?
First thing I did after unpacking the van is open a beer. Yep, I drink and eat bad food…I am on vacation. The kids wanted to go to the pool and the first thing I was told was that no alcohol was allowed. So, I threw three extra beers in the pool bag and headed to the pool with everyone, including my MIL with all her knitting accessories. This was the start of not being able to do much with only my wife and kids.
Like I said in an earlier post and a brief mention here is that I like to eat while on vacation. After dinner, I was hoping to find a place to eat but, no my MIL had other plans. It was planned for us to have tacos. I had a taco and remained hungry the rest of the night. She also, was upset that the kids didn’t eat all of it. My kids are hit or miss with eating. Sometimes they shock us with how much they eat but, most of the time we know they won’t eat much. So, we had to sit for a formal dinner at a table that really was NOT meant to host 7 people.
I know I am an early to bed; early to rise kind of person but, that kind of goes with a working schedule which has me up at 4:00 am every morning. My in-laws on the other hand have their set TV schedule and recorded shows that they watch each night and like to stay up late. I was hoping we could kind of meet in the middle but, why would I think that? The condo has 2 TV’s. One TV is in the extra bedroom (with the 2 blow up mattresses, love seat, suitcase and dirty clothes) and the other is in the front room. As my wife and I laid down on the pull out bed to try to sleep, I found out that the TV doesn’t shut off until around midnight. They even drink coffee while watching, talking, and reading the paper at night. I think that was my last night in the front room. It wasn’t like I was going to have any private moments so; I figured my wife could share the bed with one or 2 of the kids while I stayed in the extra bedroom on an air mattress.
Another night my kids got in trouble for trying to change the front room’s television. How were they supposed to know that grandma was recording two shows to watch later that night? So, I got to hang out in our 10X10 foot room with three kids, two air mattresses, love seat, suitcase and dirty clothes pile and watch Austin and Alley and Phineas and Ferb for a few hours.
In the condo there was no privacy. It seemed to me my MIL had to make sure we weren’t doing anything we were not supposed to. With the mattresses on the floor of the bedroom we couldn’t shut the door. The bedroom was right next to the bathroom. Why did my MIL insist on trying to have a conversation with my wife while she was doing her hair and I was trying to change in the bedroom? Every day?
I think you get the stressful living quarters but, it was only me that it bothered. The kids and wife were ok with it. We were able to do a couple of things without our chaperones. We visited Winter from the movie Dolphin Tale and then went to Clear Water Beach. The kids had a blast playing in the sand and the cold water.
With our chaperones we went to Apollo Beach to see saw some manatees. At least we had someone to take a picture of us. We also went to Busch Gardens with the grandparents.
Another day, since it was raining, we went to see Oz The Great and Powerful. Since we were out unsupervised, I wanted to find a restaurant but, was told we were to have chicken at the condo. I cried! In the end her parents met us out at a restaurant they recommended. It was horrible.
This post was taken from the negative part of the trip. We actually had a ton of fun. I could have written this post from the positive perspective but, that would have been longer than this post. We learned quite a bit on this trip. Don’t believe the arrival time of the Garmin and sometimes spending on our own condo is well worth the money spent.

I am off of work today. One of the things I like about being off is I don’t have to be in a hurry to do everything. For example I have already worked out and showered but, I am in no hurry to get dressed. No one is around to scare so, here I am donning a towel and posting about my Friday.
As mentioned, I worked out this morning. I am in a Kettlebell Bootcamp that meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (Saturdays are also open). The session I am in starts at 5:15 am. So, even though I am off work, I still get up bright and early. If I were more camera talented, I would have taken a picture of the workout on the board or maybe even me trying to do the workout but, all you get from me is a list of the workout.
- Warm Up
- Get-ups 1R/1L
- Push ups(10)
- Stations (5 minutes each)
- Pull Ups(5) or Ring Rows(10) – you go I go with a buddy
- Double Kettlebell Squats(5) – you go I go with a buddy
- Weighted Alt Leg Raises(30) or whatever you can get in 40 seconds rest for 20 seconds
- Jump Rope – 40 seconds on 20 seconds off
- Finisher (21 reps first set, 15 reps second set, 9 reps last set)
After that, I decided to run about a mile around the gym while the next Kettlebell Session was warming up. Since I am off work, what the heck..DO IT ALL AGAIN! So, I did it a second time. I like being off work. Now on to my
honey do list which includes shopping for my 14th wedding anniversary gift for my wife. Any suggestions? Then I need to clean the garage. Fun Fun!

I was thinking nothing really happened last year. Then I thought I did start this blog. I went back through and realized that I did do something last year. I started this blog in February (wow almost a year). This was just a way to keep track of my attempt to lose weight for a competition at work. Since it was a weight loss blog I had to swallow my pride and post some half naked secret photos of myself. The first ones are scary but, I stuck with it and faithfully posted pictures about every week or so.
I learned that eating clean and healthy actually made me feel better. Towards the end of the year I also learned that I really love food and sometimes bad food outweighed the way good food made me feel. I learned my normal day to day weight isn’t 130 pounds where I finished nor is it 170 pounds where I started. It is somewhere in-between. I am at 150 pounds right now. I am not really happy about it but, I am not going to kill myself for it either.
I set some goals to run some races. I ran 3 races last year with my best one a 10 K that I finished in 45:40. I ran 2 other shorter runs with my wife and that was fun as well but, not as competitive.
I also, started lifting weights more and actually have fallen in love with Kettlebell Training. I started this in December and I have just started a new session today.
Now going into 2013, I will continue with my Kettlebells. Being in my early 40’s, I plan on staying a little stricter on my food. If I did in my 20’s what I do now in my 40’s, I may have been cute with a great body. Now I just have to try harder. A goal that I have started is to read my Bible every day. I have tried this before but, I am a slow reader and sometimes I just don’t understand the language. So, I am doing our church’s One-Year New Testament Challenge in 2013. It should be shorter reading on a daily basis and I can look up stuff that I don’t understand. I will do this one. I am still running every day and plan to run a few more races and may even try to do one of those cross training, mudder, ultimate warrior type of a race.
I also plan to update something on here once a week or so. Hopefully something fun and exciting things will happen for me to write about.

I have not updated this blog in a while. I don’t really have an excuse other than I am just lazy.
Last week I finished my third race. It was a little over 4.5 miles and I ran it completely with my wife (brownie points). I was a pretty easy run with very little elevation changes but it was packed with runners. There were over 15,000 people that ran. Since it was such good weather in Indiana on Thanksgiving, everyone that registered actually showed up. Although I was all set to wear my long tights, it was warm enough to wear shorts. Whew, saved from embarrassment again.
I am totally into my kettlebell classes. I think I am getting stronger and thicker but, I also have added some pounds. I have not taken any measurements and I am not real too happy with what I see in the mirror. I am going to stick with my extra insulation for the winter and be ok with it. I really haven’t changed the way I eat but, I cheat a lot more than I should. I really meant to post my progress pictures and measurements during my Kettlebell Bootcamp. I have about a month to go and I promise I will post some of my insulated self-pictures at the end. And with that I will leave you with breaking news, we have all been doing it wrong…

For the handful of helpful followers I have, you have and will kind of know more about me that you probably want to. No secrets left behind but, we are all family (in a weird way) so I hope it doesn’t bother you too much. My main goal for eating healthy and exercising is not really to extend my days here on this earth but, to look good naked. I know selfish, right? I just want be able to look good when the family heads to the beach or maybe when my wife looks at me when I get in or out of the shower (I don’t think she even looks now). I really have no clue what that has to do with this post. I guess I just wanted to share.
I kind of love this time of year. Football is in full swing from high school, to college, and to NFL. The thing I do not like is the colder weather. I have taken pride for the past few months starting in March I have been getting up at 4:00 am to run. Yes it was 40 degrees when I started then but, I had been used to the colder winter weather. Now it is 40 degrees but, I have been used to the warmer summer weather. Going from hot to cold makes the cold feel colder and lately my bed feels warmer at 4:00. My alarm goes off and I have the outdoor temperature flashing on my ceiling. I am kind of weird about time and weather. I like having clocks everywhere and I am always checking on the weather. Bad for me! When 37 degrees is flashing it’s really hard for me to get up and go running. I even have my clothes laid out. Don’t laugh…I have some Capri type thermal pants. Yes they are women’s. I am short and guys’ thermals or tights are baggy in the crotch and don’t fit right. Those are worn under a pair of jogging pants. Then I put on a couple of layers for my top. I have a hat and gloves right there in the pile. I just can’t wake my lazy butt up. It has been over a week since I have run. I guess I am waiting for my Indian Summer. I guess that is my excuse but, next week is when I start my Kettlebell Bootcamp. My baseline picture and measurements later this week may be a bit comical. No more excuses. I forgot to mention staying up too late watching football and tailgating all day on Sundays. My boys went to the Colts game with me yesterday.
Time to start trying to help myself look good naked (I may need a mask and another body…it is Halloween time).

Finally, I have my beginning and ending pictures up. WOW! I was plump in the beginning. You can check out my progress chart and the pictures on my Progress page.
At the start of the contest I always thought I would be able to win the percentage part of the competition. I didn’t think I would have to hit 22% loss. My numbers at the end were a bit deceiving. Like I said I had some tricks I was planning on using at the end. I noticed most of the people were working out right before weighing in. They also wore shorts for their weigh-in. I followed my workout schedule of working out at night before the weigh-in. I also wore jeans, golf shirt, t-shirt, underwear, socks, phone and wallet in pocket. The last week I practically went bare. I wore shorts, practically holey socks, light t-shirt, no wallet or phone, and no underwear. Then on the last weigh-in I worked out before weighing in. I figured this would make up quite a bit of difference compared to everyone else. They had been doing that all along.
I was dehydrated for my last weigh-in. A week later I am at 138 pounds. I am back on track now.
I am not planning on losing any more weight. I will take a weight loss but, that isn’t my new goal. I have added some heavy lifting as opposed to running 4-6 miles daily. I like running so, I will still run 2-3 times a week. I am also, half way into Insanity and I plan on doing that every day. Insanity is quite a bit of cardio and I wanted to add more heavy strength training to see what that would do.
I am still addicted to the blog thing so, I will update it with any progress or lack of progress I make. This blog may just turn out to be about stupid things I do. Maybe you can give me some suggestions or dares to have me do. I will take pictures and we can all have a few minutes of laughter from my stupidity.

I was totally shocked at the weigh in this morning. I guess I shouldn’t be too shocked. I can see the finish line of this competition and I know I can win. I told my wife I am all in. I said I was going to make drastic changes just to get that win. One change I made was I started Insanity along with my regular runs of 3-5 miles a day. I am one week into it and I guess it has paid off. I am at 142 pounds. That is 4.4 pounds down from last week. I cut out cheating for this last stretch. Up until this post, I would cheat by eating any of those great snacks my kids have – some jelly beans, chocolates, marshmallows, etc. I could list more. I wouldn’t eat much but, I wouldn’t stop myself from stealing a bite or five. I still think the scales might be a bit touchy.

I have a few more changes for next week. Hopefully, the number still goes down. I hope I don’t resort to cutting off limbs. I wonder what a pinky weighs.
